Topstep is a futures evaluation route. The decision is whether its cost structure and loss limits fit your strategy, not whether the advertised account balance looks large. Passing an evaluation and becoming eligible for a payout are different milestones.

The account path

The Trading Combine is a simulated evaluation. Passing leads to an Express Funded Account rather than a second evaluation phase. The Combine has a consistency objective as well as its profit and risk requirements. Source: Trading Combine parameters.

Compare the two fee paths

For a $50,000 Combine, Topstep lists Standard at $49 per month plus a $149 activation fee, or No Activation Fee at $95 per month. The pricing page also separates resets and optional market data from the entry price. Check the selected size and current checkout before purchasing. Source: pricing and payment questions.

Illustration, excluding resets, taxes and extras: four monthly payments would make Standard $345 including activation, versus $380 for the no-activation path. At one monthly payment, the same comparison is $198 versus $95. These are cost scenarios, not predictions of how quickly you will pass. Your expected time in evaluation changes the comparison.

The usable loss allowance matters more than the headline balance

The published Maximum Loss Limit is $2,000 for the $50,000 account, $3,000 for $100,000 and $4,500 for $150,000. Reaching the limit can trigger liquidation during trading, including through unrealized losses. Source: Maximum Loss Limit.

Plan position size from the remaining distance to the floor. Do not treat a $50,000 label as $50,000 of risk capital, and do not assume that an end-of-day calculation means an intraday breach is harmless. Recheck the rule when moving between evaluation, simulated funded and live stages.

Current payout split versus legacy terms

The current payout policy uses a 90/10 split. The first-$10,000 exception is restricted to qualifying traders who joined before January 12, 2026; it is not the standard offer for a new customer. Winning-day, balance and request requirements still apply. Source: Topstep payout policy.

Who should compare it?

A futures trader with a repeatable, bounded-risk strategy should compare the two fee paths and the exact funded-stage policy. Someone looking for spot forex, stock options or a no-evaluation account needs a different product, not a looser interpretation of this one.
